I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, tear at my hair or do all three at the same time…
Yes, it’s a new year, and for what they’re worth, many of us start thinking of “new beginnings” and “hopes” for the coming year, but this “Proxy Voting Proposal” by our esteemed Elections Commission yesterday has taken those thoughts to completely new levels.
EC Chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusoff expresses that “the proposed system is aimed at empowering individuals to cast ballots on behalf of registered voters unable to do so themselves at designated voting stations” – Malaysiakini report on 17 January 2011.
Kahkahkahkahkahkahkahkahkahkahkahkah!!!!! What a hoot! Yep, he certainly got me there!
Going by the EC’s own abysmal record in maintaining impartiality at election time, all this dazzling new proposal would accomplish is give the green light to take the “phantom voters”, vote-buying and manipulation of postal votes menace to a new record high.
Just a thought: If it’s indeed true that an early GE is upon the horizon, then why this desperate proposal in the first place? Of course it’s coming from the EC, not the Government! But who’s the boss here, actually? After all, this is Malaysia – where anything and indeed everything can happen!
Excuse me while I go wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes!
